Family Court

The Family Court of the state of New York has the authority to decide cases
affecting the lives of children and families. Family Court judges hear a wide range of cases, including adoption, child abuse and neglect, child custody and visitation, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, paternity, child support and spousal support.

Each of the five boroughs of New York City and all the surrounding counties has their own Family Court. A case is filed in the county where one of the parties lives. Judges preside over most Family Court hearings. We represent clients in these hearings, and we also frequently appear before support magistrates and referees. There are no jury trials.

The Family Court does not have jurisdiction to grant individuals a divorce or deal with property division. Divorce proceedings must be brought in the Supreme Court in the state of New York.

Our Family Law Attorneys Are Very Knowledgeable

Individuals who file a petition or attend a hearing in a New York Family Court have the option to represent themselves, but that frequently becomes a frustrating and unsuccessful ordeal. You may feel comfortable representing yourself if you:

  • Know how to cross-examine a witness
  • Understand what forms of evidence are required by the court
  • Know what is sufficient to meet evidentiary standards in family court
  • Know how to address the judge or a support magistrate during the court proceedings

If you do not have a firm grasp on any one of these things, it is wise to retain an experienced attorney. You can find one at our law firm.

The Brooklyn law firm of Arnel Law Firm provides aggressive and accomplished legal counsel for a wide range of family court matters. Our Brooklyn family court lawyers have built compelling cases that get results for more than 30 years.

Founding attorney Curt Arnel has focused on family law for his entire legal career. We take a personable approach with clients and a no-nonsense attitude in court. One key to our long track record of success is the immense preparation we put into every case. In court, there is no substitution for being prepared.

We Combine Experience With Excellence

Our decades of experience have allowed us to learn the personalities and preferences of most family court judges. We study how each judge approaches a case and what sort of evidence he or she wants to see. We use that familiarity and experience to craft the approach we believe will be most likely to provide a favorable outcome.

We have also established strong relationships with education professionals, child psychologists and other specialists who can bolster your case by testifying on your behalf.

We welcome the opportunity to review the facts of your case during a free consultation. We’ll answer your questions and recommend the best steps to take. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
