Child support can be deducted from Social Security benefits

New York custodial parents who are owed child support from their former spouse may be able to collect the money they need to care for their children even if the other parent's only source of income is Social Security benefits. However, the type of benefits that the non-custodial parent is receiving will make a difference in whether a garnishment will be allowed to take place.

Benefits and drawbacks of virtual visitation

Non-custodial New York parents who may be moving some distance away from their children might want to consider the possibility of virtual visitation. With virtual visitation, parents can fulfill their visitation agreement by using technology to communicate with their child. This might include Skype, instant messaging, or an exchange over email or social media. New York is one of several states in which courts have agreed to virtual visitation in some custody cases.

Census data suggests moms less likely to pay child support

New York parents may be interested to learn that according to statistics from the Census Bureau for 2011, noncustodial mothers are statistically less likely to pay child support than noncustodial fathers are. While race and marital status are also factors, national the trend goes against assumptions regarding which gender is less likely to pay child support.

New York divorce and doctors

New York doctors may be interested in a study that found that physicians had a divorce rate of 24 percent, making them less likely to be divorced than other health care providers, such as nurses and health care executives. Only pharmacists reported a lower divorce rate. Even nurses and executives, who had the highest divorce rates among health care providers at 33 percent and 31 percent, respectively, were less likely to be divorced than workers outside the health field. This group had a divorce rate of 35 percent, according to the study.
