Evangelista's child support settlement reached in New York

Super model Linda Evangelista had a brief relationship in 2006 with Francois Henri-Pinault, head of a French fashion empire and husband to actress Salma Hayek. The short-lived liaison resulted in a child.

A dispute over child support for the 5-year-old boy erupted last year. It ended recently following a three-day hearing and a child support settlement in New York.

Evangelista may be happy that a New York judge did not define the terms of the child's financial needs. The model reportedly wanted at least enough support from Pinault to cover their child's exclusive and expensive $46,000-a-month education.

Although the amount of the settlement is private, it is estimated that Evangelista walked away with a monthly support amount that is equal to twice or more of what any child in the state might get for a year.

Formulas are used by New York judges to establish child support, based on a child's needs and combined parental incomes. The expense shared by parents, even wealthy ones, averages $23,000 per year.

During court hearings, Evangelista's attorneys zeroed in on Pinault's extravagance for three children from a previous marriage and a child of his present union with Hayek. The billionaire apparently told the court he never told Evangelista's son about his half-siblings or invited the boy to family vacations.

The super-rich 49-year-old admitted his intercontinental affair with the famous model may have totaled seven days over a period of three or four months.

The needs of the child may have been separated more definitively from the desires of his parents had a family law judge decided the support outcome. As it was, the parents of the child were pleased with whatever the final settlement totaled.

Whether a judge would have justified a $46,000-a-month support payment due to the parents' extreme wealth is unknown. Few parents in New York battle over tens of thousands of dollars in monthly expenses for children. Many parents enter court disputes for a fraction of that amount to adequately feed, house, clothe and educate their children.
